Virginia Nell Reid Watson, 80, of the Carnes Community, passed away February 5, 2020 at Asbury House of Hospice in Hattiesburg, Ms. following an 18-Year battle from complications of cancer.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, William B. “Bill” Watson, and her parents, Hubert Reid, Sr. and Delphia Lott Reid. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, E. W. Davis and Johnny Reid, and her sister Betty Smith (Buford). Her step-son, Major General Billy Watson of Huntsville, Ala., also preceded her in death.

She is survived by her brothers, Hubert Reid, Jr. and Dr. James G. Reid, both of the Carnes Community. She is also survived by her sisters, Peggy O’Neal (Don, deceased) of Saucier, Ms., Linda Stringfellow (Darryl) of Wiggins, Ms. and Sherry Herwick (Larry, deceased) of Maxie, Ms. She is also survived by her step-daughter, Karen Thomas (John, deceased) of Birmingham, Al. and a step-son, Byron Watson (Jean) of Newburn, Al. She is also survived by 5 step grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, a host of friends.

She was a native of the Carnes Community in southern Forrest County and was a graduate of Forrest County Agricultural High School. After graduation from high school, she worked in Pensacola, Fl. where she met her husband of 42 years, William “Bill” Watson. They settled in his home town of Atmore, Al. where they remained until his death in 2002. Virginia was employed there with the Vanity Fair Corporation for 40 years. She and her husband were also owners of VW Finance Company for several years. While in Atmore, she became an avid Alabama football fan.

She then returned to Carnes in 2002 to live with her brother, James, and to be in the home with their bedridden mother. She was a member of Carnes Missionary Baptist where she accepted Christ as a teenager. While living in Atmore, she was a member of Brooks Memorial Baptist Church.

Virginia was known for her pleasing, easy going personality, and she loved and was loved everyone; her family, her step-children and step-grandchildren very much as her own, her co-workers, friends and neighbors. In particular, at the numerous medical facilities where she was a patient and with home health in the home during the past 18 years, workers would continually remark about what a pleasing patient she was.
