Charlene Campbell Asbury passed away peacefully at her home in Karns on January 14, 2020.

She was born October 26, 1926 in Pineville, Kentucky. She studied secondary education at Eastern Kentucky University and taught school in Middlesboro, KY. After marrying her husband, Jay Asbury, they moved to Karns in 1959, and she worked as a lab technician at the newly built Oak Ridge research facility.

Charlene joined the Beaver Ridge United Methodist Church in 1962 and was a devoted parishioner for 58 years until her death. She was the director of the church kindergarten program for many years and taught Sunday school for kindergarten-age children for several more years. She held several leadership and office positions at Beaver Ridge, the Oak Ridge District, Holston Conference, and South East Region. She also attended and held offices within the United Methodist Women organization.

Charlene had a deep passion for mission work, participating in 35 foreign and domestic Methodist Church sponsored missions and outreach programs. She thoroughly enjoyed her travels abroad on more than 20 missions to more than 8 countries and had many fond memories of these trips. She also fondly valued her work in the many domestic missions and out-reach programs she participated in around the US.

She joined the FCE, Family Community Education Club (FCE)-UT Agricultural Extension Service in 1960 and was an active participant for the past 60 years. In 2018 she was voted Volunteer of the Year for the East Tennessee Region.

Charlene was also a substitute teacher at Karns Elementary and Middle Schools. She worked at Cokesbury Bookstore from 1999-2004.

She regularly attended Karns Senior Citizens Center where she worked on crafts and projects with her friends and taught baking lessons through last year. Over the past several years she also participated in the Quilts of Valor foundation to honor veterans.

Charlene touched many lives and will always be fondly remembered for her bright blue eyes, her engaging smile and easy laugh, her quick wit, and her delicious baking. In addition, Charlene was proud to be physically and mentally active in her 90’s and thoroughly enjoyed being our beloved “Granny Charlene”. She relished sharing many memories of her 93 years with her son, daughter-in-law, and grandsons. Much laughter abounded as she shared many baking lessons with her grandsons, and they taught her about the latest in technology.

Charlene is preceded in death by her parents Foster A and Ella (Miracle) Campbell of Middlesboro, KY, her husband Joseph “Jay” Asbury, her son John J Asbury of Knoxville, TN, and her sister Sadie Perkins of Middlesboro, KY, her brother James “Ned” Campbell of Bluff City, TN and her brother Curtis R Campbell of Elizabethan, TN.
