Commemorative & Biographical Annals of Central Pennsylvania:
Joseph C Bierly is one of the substantial citizens of Brush Valley & the history of his life reveals a character which is well worthy of respect. As a boy he attended the schools of Rebersburg with no regularity. From 8 to 12 years old he learned the blacksmith's trade. He learned this trade with his brother Melchior & after 3 years received a pair of shoes & a Kentucky jean. His annual vacations were spent in the harvest field earning money for clothes. He worked at Tylersville as a journeyman.
In Feb 1866 he was united in marriage to Miss Judith Meyer the daughter of Henry & Hannah (Bierly) Meyer. He bought 140 acres from S S Wolf and built a shop on it & followed his trade for some years. In 1879 he fell in a thrasher losing his left arm. This did not prevent him from his duties.
Despite his shrewdness & caution in business he has met with reverses. Quiet & unassuming in manner he impresses one as a strong character. He is a staunch Democrat.
