Born in Granby, the son of Rev. Irvine and Sarah Murdoch, he moved to Oswego when he was 10 and lived there until his death. He was married to Mary J. Cooper Murdoch for 60 years, father of William L., George Byron, C. Minnette, May (Reese) & S. Edith
He worked as a traveling freight agent on the Oswego-Syracuse Railroad, then was a superindendant for the N.T. Co. docks for a number of years. For a while he was a customs inspector and also was elected as an alderman of the 6th ward on the Republican ticket.
