Thelma Rose Mitchell was born on September 18, 1939, at Knoxville, Iowa. She was the daughter of Robert Ellis and Adrena (De Jong) Mitchell. Thelma graduated from Pella High School in Pella, Iowa with the Class of 1957. During high school she worked with her parents at their restaurant in Pella. Thelma enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1959 and served for a short term with the idea of becoming a traffic controller. She then worked at a grocery store in Pella and at the Otley School in Otley, Iowa as a cook. Thelma then was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and vowed it would never inhibit her ability to walk. She dealt with the effects of her illness for 41 years. She purchased her home in Otley in 1972 and did a lot of babysitting and was an avid reader. Following her move into Pella, Iowa in 2018 she donated many of her books to the public library. On January 20, 2020, Thelma passed away at Jefferson Place in Pella at the age of 80 years. Those who will cherish her memory are her two children and their families.

Of her original family Thelma leaves her two brothers: Thomas Mitchell and Patricia of Otley, Iowa, Michael Mitchell of St. Charles, Iowa; brother-in-law, Evert (Barbara Mitchell) Kroes of Pella, Iowa; along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Alainna Joy Grant; her parents, Robert and Adrena Mitchell; her sister, Barbara Jo Kroes and a sister-in-law, Patricia (Michael) Mitchell. Thelma had an appreciation for angels and was a very religious person who practiced her faith as a very forgiving person. Most recently Thelma was received into the Catholic Church and became a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pella, Iowa.

Visitation will begin Saturday afternoon, January 25, 2020, at Van Dyk- Duven Funeral Home. Family will be present Saturday from 3:00 to 5:00 pm with a prayer service at 3:00 pm.

Inurnment will be made in t’Lam Cemetery, Marion County, Iowa
