MR. JAMES ANDREW BARTELL
As briefly announced in a previous issue, the death occurred on July 22 at the home of his son James at Batlow of Mr. James Andrew Bartell, a well-known identity of Batlow and formerly of Adelong, at the age of 83 years. He had been in failing health for the past twelve months and for four weeks prior to his demise he was confined to his bed. The late Mr. Bartell was born in the sailing ship "Rockhampton" at "Brisbane Roads" off the Queensland coast. He was the only son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Bartell, with whom he came to Adelong as a young man, his father being employed in the butchering trade. Deceased spent many years in Adelong, being engaged as a carrier by the local storekeepers. Forty-three years ago he went to Batlow with the late Mr. Alf. Coleman to cut eucalyptus. He returned to his former occupation as a carrier and remained at Batlow ever since. Deceased married Miss Elizabeth Whiting, of Sharp's Creek, Adelong, and to the union were born three sons and four daughters. He is survived by his widow, sons James, William and Robert (Batlow) and daughters Violet (Mrs. O'Brien, Batlow), Daisy (Mrs. V. Bowman, Batlow), Pansy (Mrs. R. Keenan, Bombowlee) and Rose (Mrs. K. Smith, Batlow). The funeral took place on Saturday, July 23, leaving from the Church of England, Batlow, after a service conducted by Rev. N. R. Edwards, for the C. of E. portion of the Batlow Cemetery. Rev. Edwards officiated at the graveside and W. W. Beavan & Son had charge of the mortuary arrangements. Pall-bearers were Messrs. James, William and Robert Bartell (sons), Harold Bartell (grandson) and Keith Smith (son-in-law).
