Orval was the son of John Darwin Knechtges and Edith Gilbert, and the brother of Mary Fern Knechtges (stage name Peggy Gilbert - see famous memorial 18064683). He married Nona Gunn, daughter of Frank and Alice Gunn, on 18 Nov 1922 in Woodbury, Iowa. Together they had the children Darlene and John Darwin Knechtges. After the death of his wife, Orval and children lived with his mother and sister in Los Angeles.
