"SMITH, TAMARA STECH, 69, of Wyndmoor, PA, died May 12, 2016 after a brief illness. Tamara came to Philadelphia in 1963 to attend Bryn Mawr College where she earned her Bachelor's degree and PhD in archaeology. She became a highly respected and recognized scholar during her affiliation with Bryn Mawr, and later with the University of Pennsylvania Museum. Her primary area of study was near eastern metallurgy and she conducted extensive excavations in southwestern Turkey. Between 1987-1992 she was the editor of the journal Archeomaterials and later served as the Secretary of Bryn Mawr College. In 1996, Tamara moved to Stowe, VT, where she devoted her time to her husband, Robert I. Smith, her garden and her dogs. Tamara returned to Philadelphia in 2010 and settled in Wyndmoor. She was a devoted gardener, traveler and reader, who loved good wine and better conversation. She is survived by her son, Caleb H. Wheeler; daughter-in-law, Michelle Coleman; companion, Thomas Callis; step-daughter, Elizabeth Curtiss Smith; and step-son, Robert I. Smith, Jr. A private Memorial Service is being arranged. The family requests that any donations be made to the Morris Arboretum or the World Monuments Fund."
