Wilma L Buchanan, 84, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 7:08 pm January 4, 2020 at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mount Vernon. She was born May 7, 1935 in Jefferson County, Illinois to the late Howard and Melva (Neal) Brown. Wilma married Charles Austin on November 17, 1953. He preceded her in death on April 17, 1974.

Wilma is survived by her children, Debra Collins and husband, Jeff of Henderson, Nevada, Sandra Shurtz and husband, Bruce of Scheller, Illinois, Steven Austin and wife, Tammy of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Charles E. Austin and wife, Lisa of Steeleville, Illinois, and Teresa Austin of Mount Vernon, Illinois; grandchildren, Rachael Thornquest and husband, Dru, Charla Fulkerson, Steven Ray Austin, Jr. and wife, Sarah, Charles Aaron Austin, and Rachael A. Collins; and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Wilma was preceded in death by her siblings, Dale Brown, Jim Brown, Annabelle Boyd, Alta May Childers, and Geraldine Pitts; and siblings-in-law, Jesse Childers, Betty Brown, and D.A. Pitts.

Wilma was a faithful member of Harlan Road Church of God. She served as a care giver for many years. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. Wilma will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved her.

A Visitation will be held Saturday, January 11, 2020 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Newell Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. A Funeral Service will begin at 12:00 pm with Reverend Merle Fullerton officiating. Interment will follow at Wolf Prairie Cemetery in Mount Vernon. Memorials may be made in Wilma's honor to the American Diabetes Association.
