Alta Mae Childers, 85,@of Mt. Vernon, IL, entered the gates of heaven 6:15 p.m. Monday, July 27, 2015 at Mt. Vernon Health Care Center in Mt. Vernon. Alta was born December 27, 1929, in Mt. Vernon the daughter of Howard and Melva (Neal) Brown. She married Jesse L. Childers on April 16, 1946, in Harrisburg, IL and he preceded her to heaven on August 27, 2007. Mrs. Childers is survived by five children, Daisy King and husband Bud of Sandoval, Jesse Childers and wife Mary of Junction City, Donna Koch and husband Richard of Opdyke, Randy Childers of Centralia, and Rickey Childers and wife Lisa of Mt. Vernon; dear friend, Duke Roberts of Centralia; sister, Wilma Buchanan of Mt. Vernon; two sister-in-laws, Delores Brown and Floralice Campbell of Mt. Vernon; eleven grandchildren and twenty four great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Childers was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Jim Brown, Dale Brown, and Clyde William Brown; two sisters, Annabelle Boyd and Geraldine Pitts; two sisters-in-law, Betty Brown and Nora Elliston, and five brothers-in-law, Charles Austin, Kenneth Buchanan, John Boyd, Russell Elliston, and Don Campbell. Mrs. Childers was a longtime member of the Church of God and where she was active in the Ladies Auxiliary. Funeral service for Alta Mae Childers will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with Pastor Ted Anderson and Pastor Doug Bowers officiating. Interment will follow at Wolf Prairie Cemetery in rural Mt. Vernon. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, from 5-8 p.m. at Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
