Studious, intelligent and compassionate, Lesley lived a humble life despite her family wealth; she had her inheritance held in trust and her mother gave her £20 per week in spending money. She was in her second year at Wulfrun College studying for her A-levels in pure and applied mathematics. At the end of her studies she had hopes of transferring to Sheffield University to be closer to her boyfriend.
In the midnight hours of 14 January 1975, Lesley was taken from her home in Highley. In March, after a highly publicized search, Lesley's body was discovered 65 miles from her home, in an underground drainage shaft of a reservoir at Bathpool Park in Kidsgrove. It was determined that she had died on or about 17 January. Her killer was arrested in December 1975 and died in prison in 2011 while serving a life term.
