Burns Fatal To Prominent NM Woman
The body of Mrs. Marie Garland, 79, is being held for an inquest after she died Tuesday night in El Paso General Hospital, apparently as the result of falling into a tub of scalding water in Hotel Paso del Norte at 1 a. m. Tuesday. Mrs. Garland was a prominent resident of Espanola, N. M 30 miles north of Santa Fe. According to Mrs. Garland's physician. Dr. Ernest K. Armistead, Mrs. Garland had risen early Monday in her room at Hotel Paso del Norte to wash some stockings. She had patially filled the bathtub with hot water when she accidentally fell in, and was in the water for about three hours. Dr. Armistead estimated. . - She had resided in Espanola since 1925. Mrs. Garland was en route from Cape Cod, Mass., to the H&M Ranch near Alcalde,. N.. M. where she spent her Summers, for Christmas. Her first husband was Bert Garland (edit: James Albert Garland), son of the president of the First National Bank of New York. A native of Massachusetts, Mrs. Garland claimed to be a descendant of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Widowed when a young woman by Garland's death, she took up writing, poetry and painting. 'Two of her published poetry .volumes "were "The Potter's Clay" and "The Winged Spirit.", Her second husband was Swinburne Hale, attorney and father of Diana Forbes-Robertson who recently remarried Vincent Sheehah in London. (edit: incorrect. Swinburne Hale was married to Beatrice Forbes-Robertson. Diana Forbes-Robertson was unrelated to Swinburne Hale). Her third and fourth husbands were Henwar Rodakiewicz and Allen Fiske. She was divorced from Fiske. a few years before her death. During her lifetime, Mrs. Garland was reported to have adopted 20 children. Mrs. Garland considered herself 80 years old. Friends said she followed the Oriental custom of figuring one year old at his or her birth. Her survivors include two sons, Hamilton of Espanola, and Charles, of Mount Vernon, NY and a daughter, Mrs. Hope Ingersoll of Buzzards Bay, Mass. The body is at Kaster and Maxon Funeral Home.
