United States Marine Corps 4-Star General. He served as the 28th Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, serving in that duty from 1983 until 1987. In 1950 he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant out of the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Villanova University in Pennsylvania, and would go on to serve thirty-seven years in active duty. Promoted to full-rank General in 1981, after his service as Marine Commandant and his retirement, he served as he served as Chairman of the American Battle Monuments Commission.
