Obituary Albert Kelley, at 80, NASA executive, BC dean
Albert J. Kelley of Arlington, Va., and formerly Milton, former dean of Boston College's School of Management and a veteran, died Wednesday following a long illness. He was 80.
Raised in West Roxbury, Mr. Kelley was a graduate of Boston Latin School. He was a resident of Milton for more than 30 years and lived in Washington during the 1950s, '60s and '90s.
Mr. Kelley was a 1942 graduate of Boston Latin High School and received his doctorate of science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He began his 23-year career in the Navy as a carrier and test pilot. From 1945 to 1947, he served as a member of the Halsey Carrier Task Force during the Occupation of Japan, Atlantic Fleet. Mr. Kelley flew Skyraider attack planes off carriers in the Korean Theater.
He later helped design high-performance aircrafts and advanced weapons and became one of NASA's top engineering project leaders.
He moved to Boston in 1964 to work as deputy director of NASA's electronics research center, helping to lead the electronics research that contributed to the Apollo missions.
After switching careers, Mr. Kelley worked as dean of Boston College's School of Management from 1967 to '77. At that time he also served as an economic adviser to Massachusetts Gov. Francis Sargent and the White House.
Mr. Kelley later worked as senior vice president for both Arthur D. Little, Cambridge, and United Technologies. He served as deputy undersecretary of defense during the George H.W. Bush administration and was a Harvard fellow and senior research affiliate at MIT.
Husband of the late Virginia (Riley), Mr. Kelley is survived by three sons, Dr. Mark A. of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Shaun V. of Lovettsville, Va., and David C. of Wyckoff, N.J.; a brother, Paul X. of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Joanne McCarthy of Sharon; and five grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m tomorrow at St. Ignatius, Chestnut Hill.
Burial will follow in Milton Cemetery, Milton.
