Craig Jonathan Alwin, 65, died peacefully Aug. 20, 2018, at his home in Wausau.

He was surrounded by Patricia, his loving wife of 41 years; his children and their wives, extended family, and his faithful yellow lab Greta.

Craig was born Dec. 31, 1952, in Milwaukee, to Walter and JoAnn Alwin. He was the 10th of 12 children and four additional adopted siblings.

Craig graduated from Fort Atkinson High School in 1971 where he lettered in football, and track and field. He continued his education at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where he earned his degree in sociology.

Following his graduation, Craig started his career in social work, where for 36 years he devoted his care and efforts to helping those in need. A humble man, he often would say there’s no greater gift in life than helping others.

In 2012, Craig retired from his deputy director position with Taylor County Human Services to enjoy his well-earned retirement.

Outside work, he loved to spend time with friends and family, particularly with his seven grandchildren. He also enjoyed walks in the outdoors with his dog Greta, motorcycling, hikes in the hills surrounding Phoenix, Ariz., and a good movie.

He also will be remembered for planting many trees throughout his life.

Craig is survived by his wife, Patricia (Manthie); his sons and their wives, Jameison and Melissa Guld, David and Angela Guld, Dylan and Christina Alwin, and Seth and Rachel Alwin; grandchildren, Paige, Cooper, Ava, Elisabeth, Evelyn, Mason and Gabriella; siblings, Gabrielle Alwin, Penny (Jim) Kleinhans, Pamela Fullerton, Debra (Roy) Rockwell, Lance (Nancy) Alwin, Brent Alwin, Jill (Matt) Simmons and Sean (Laura) Alwin; special niece, Brook (Matt) Seevers and children; and many other loving nieces, nephews and friends — all of whom he loved and cared for with a gentle, altruistic kindness.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and JoAnn (Robinson) Alwin; siblings, Scott Alwin and April Alwin; and grandson, Pierce.

Everyone who remembers him is asked to celebrate Craig’s life in their own way, always remembering that one of his greatest wishes was that we all strive to seek out tolerance and teach peace to one another.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Craig Alwin Scholarship fund that has been created to continue his wishes of helping the next generation. Funds can be directed to the Northcentral Technical College Foundation at 1000 W. Campus Drive in Wausau, WI 54401.

Craig also would hope that you will do an act of unexpected and unsolicited kindness to someone in need in his memory.

A celebration of life and luncheon will be held Sept. 8, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Greenwood Hills Country Club in Wausau.
