XENIA — John E. Slaughter, age 81, of Xenia passed away Sunday, April 1, 2018 at Elmcroft Nursing Center. He was born April 12, 1936 in Alpha, Ohio the son of Joe and Helen (Stewart) Slaughter. John was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Joann Touhey; a son: Gregory Neal Collins, and his wife: Betty C. Slaughter in December 2016. He is survived by his daughter: Brenda Ann (Mike) Phillips; son: William Dean Collins, Jr., a sister: Edna Mae Dietz; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. John retired from Knollwood Garden Center, where he had been the Head Gardner. He was awarded the Best Grower in the state of Ohio. He was very dedicated to his profession and prior to his retirement, enjoyed working alongside his daughter. He enjoyed drag racing at KilKare and was extremely proud of his 1964 Ford Galaxy 500XL. He graduated from Beavercreek High School, where he had been a basketball player. He was a good parent, teaching his children the value of money and to take care of their things. He was very generous and after his mother had passed away, he continued to visit the residents of the nursing home where she had lived. Gathering of Friends will be held 5-7 PM Thursday at McColaugh Funeral Home, Inc. Xenia. Services will begin at 7 PM Thursday at the funeral home.
