Member of Congress 1778 to 1781. Colonial in Militia during the Revolutionary War. Delegate to the 1776 Provincial Congress which met at Halifax, North Carolina and adopted the Halifax Resolution of Independence. Member of the committee to draft a Bill of Rights and a Constitution for the state of North Carolina. Justice of the peace for Martin County, North Carolina and elected to both the North Carolina state House of Commons and Senate. His tombstone reads: "A member of the Continental Congress and of the Convention which formed the first Constitution of North Carolina. Much of his life was spent in the service of his country. He married Winefred Blount of Edenton."
