George was the son of Henry Scharlach (1819-1899) and Catharina Hagmier (1820-1872). The family immigrated to North America and arrived in Canada on Dec. 19, 1854.

1861 census of Berlin Village 19 years old (living with parents).

On December 20th, 1864, George married Anna Marie Woelfle (1845-1924) in Waterloo County. He was 22 years old.

They raised 11 known children in Berlin, Ontario.
