WEAK HEART CAUSED DEATH

Of Joseph Erea Without Warning Last Evening.

EXPIRED IN THEATER GALLERY

Had Exerted Himself in Running up the Long Stairway.

Joseph Erea, aged 32 years, residing at 308 North Seventh street and employed at the Hawks Furniture Co.'s plant as a finisher, dropped dead shortly before 8 o'clock last evening as he was running up the gallery stairway at the Jefferson theatre to see the performance of "Dolly Varden."

Heart disease was the cause of his demise. Mr. Erea had just entered the playhouse, bought his ticket and reached the top landing of the stairs, when he fell prostrate from exhaustion, he having exerted himself in making the ascent.

House Officer Ogle and Gallery Doorman Ramsby picked him up and carried him to the music store of Beyerle & Croop, adjoining the theatre. He was dead when they reached there, life having become extinct while coming down the stairway.

Messages were sent to his relatives and the body turned over to Undertaker Culp, who removed it to his morgue. Coroner Dewey was notified and reached here this morning from Elkhart. After examining the witnesses a verdict of death from heart disease was returned, the inquest being merely formal.

Today the remains were transferred to the Erea home.

The deceased came to Goshen from Valparaiso 12 years ago, when the Cosmo Buttermilk Soap company's plant was removed here.

He was married to Miss Emma Honert, daughter of Fred Honert of Goshen, who with two children, one eight years old and the other two and one-half years of age, survive him.

Mr. Erea met with quite an extended reputation as a ball player. He at one time was prominently identified with a local team.

Until a few months ago his health was good. Then he began complaining and recently suffered a bad spell of the heart. Since then his heart gave him much trouble but yesterday he was as well as usual and last night ate a hearty supper. He went to the theatre alone.

The unusual death of Mr. Erea did not cause much excitement about the theatre, for the reason that many people had not the slightest intimation that anything out of the ordinary had occurred. Those who saw him succumb thought he had only fainted away from over-exertion. But fewer people in the lower floor audience had arrived when he was carried down.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 1:30 o'clock p.m. at the German M.E. church. Interment will be made in Oak Ridge cemetery. Mr. Erea carried a small life insurance policy in the Metropolitan company.
