A joyous celebration took place in the heavens on the return of our dad, grandpa, brother, uncle, mentor and friend on December 5, 2019 at the righteous age of 97. He was prepared and ready for his next adventure when age and a stroke ultimately caused his passing.

He was born in Blanding, Utah in November 1922 to loving parents, Charles Moulton Carroll and Lydia Kartchner Carroll. Mark was the ninth of eleven children, and the final child to leave this earthly experience. He had a strong love for each of his siblings and spoke of them in the highest regard throughout his life – Charles, Jr., Nina, William, Demar, Lavar, Neal, Harold, Clea, Merrill, and Willard. The Carroll family resided in several Utah towns, but eventually settled on a farm in Crescent, Utah. Mark learned to work hard and serve others at a young age. He attended Jordan High School and enjoyed playing sports. Basketball was a passion, but an accident with a farm horse at a young age made playing sports difficult, although he was always willing to play HORSE or 21 on the basketball court well into his eighties. He also loved hunting, fishing, camping, dancing, singing, and traveling.

He joined the United States Army after the start of World War II and served faithfully in the Philippines and with the occupation of Japan. Like most veterans, he didn’t speak of his war time experiences until the latter part of his life. He was one of three that returned home from his Army squad, so there is no doubt that he had many great things to accomplish upon his honorable discharge.

He married the love of his life, Thelma Devey Carroll, in 1942. They were sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple for time and all eternity in 1951. Together they raised four daughters that are a testament as to the greatness of their parents – Charlotte (Donald), Sharon (Richard), Lynda Kay (Robert), and JoAnne (Brad). His love, partnership, compassion, and service for his great wife, was a great lesson for all that knew them. Mark and Thelma spent most of their marriage residing in West Jordan, Utah and Colorado Springs, Colorado. They spent most of their married life in the service of others and the Lord until Thelma passed away at a fairly young age. Their legacy includes 17 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren. Mark was preceded in death by his daughter, Charlotte Beebe, and grandchildren, Carrie and Richard Carroll Beaty.

Mark spent the majority of his working life as an auto mechanic and service manager. He could fix anything that had a motor. He also worked for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints maintaining church properties in the Colorado Springs Area.

He later married Winona Tucker Wright and spent many happy years travelling and serving the lord. They loved their experience serving together in the Portland, Oregon Mission and in various LDS church callings. After Winona’s passing, Mark married Lena Bowler. They were able to enjoy each other’s company and served a mission in St. George, Utah. They also served many hours in the St. George Temple until Lena’s passing.

Mark truly leaves a legacy of faith, strength, service, and love. He served in many LDS leadership positions that included Bishop (more than once), Branch President, Stake High Counselor, and various youth leadership assignments. He loved the youth and the opportunity to teach and be involved in scouting. Most important to him was family and faith. He had an uncanny ability to show love, kindness, and unconditional support to those he knew.

A special thank you to the staff and residents at the Charleston Assisted Living Center. Mark enjoyed and appreciated your care and friendship the past two years.

A celebration of Mark’s life and legacy will be held Saturday, December 14, 2019, 12:00 p.m. at the LDS church located at 9737 Chesterfield Drive, Cedar Hills, Utah. A viewing for family and friends will be held from 10:00-11:45 a.m. prior the life celebration. Interment, Alpine City Cemetery, 400 Grove Drive, Alpine, Utah
