Obituary for Patricia Joann Glenn
Patricia Joann (Jones) Glenn of Plano, age 84, passed away Saturday, November 30, 2019. Joann was born on May 22, 1935 on the family farm north of Plano, Iowa. She was the fifth child of six born to Merle and Ova (Samuelson) Jones. At the age of 2, she lost her mom to tuberculosis. At that time, she went to live with her mother's sister, Lela Harris, and Lela's husband Roy in Centerville. She attended school in Centerville and loved being in town seeing friends, attending girl scouts and participating in choir. It was always her hope, on the weekends, to see her Dad and brothers on the farm in Plano. She would spend time during her summers in DeWitt, Iowa with her sister Betty and worked at the movie theater making popcorn. When Joann was 14, she lost her father, who she adored, in a car wreck. She chose to move out to the farm in Plano to live with her brothers her senior year and attended Seymour School. Joann played basketball and was the homecoming queen. Upon graduation, she worked at ISU in Centerville as a secretary. She married Gene Glenn on November 21, 1954. Together they lived on a farm north of Promise City. They stayed busy farming and raising their 3 boys, John, Tim and Dan, on this farm on the bottoms with the long lane. In 1960, they purchased a farm and house north of Plano and completed their family with two daughters, Kimberly and Cheryl. Joann was a doting mother and dutiful farm wife, hopping on a tractor to disc when she got the chance and helping with the livestock. She was a wonderful stay-at-home mother to her children.
She had lots of friends and was in a GEG card club and the ODO club. She bowled in a league with Gene for many years. They enjoyed going camping at the state fair, and spent many weekends boating and camping at Lake Rathbun. They enjoyed going socializing and dancing with Donnie and Karen Jones and friends. Joann also played softball in Plano. She enjoyed going to the timber to cut and load her own firewood for many years. She was an accomplished musician, playing the autoharp, accordion, and was the church pianist for over 40 years at the Plano Christian Church, where she was a member. She also enjoyed being a member of the Plano Kitchen Band that made many public appearances, and sang alto in the Plano church sextet. Joann volunteered at local nursing homes throughout her life, playing the piano and music to entertain residents. After becoming an empty-nester, she got a job at the new Walmart in Centerville and was even featured in a commercial.
In 1975 she started a job that was her favorite that she fulfilled to her last day of life- and that was being a grandmother. Her pride and joy of having over 38 grandchildren and great -grandchildren allowed her to take them along doing all the things she loved the most like fishing, swimming, and sleepovers at grandma's, as well as attending their ballgames and school activities and her annual Glenn camping week. She lovingly cared for her husband in their home for six years after he had a stroke. After his passing, Joann took trips with her girlfriends to Nashville and Branson, and local adventures. Some of her personal favorites were deer and bird watching, white Persian cats, reading, eating toast and tea, and talking on the phone. She loved being at her home, tending to her flowers and mowing her own lawn up until her last summer of 2019.
Left to honor Joann's memory are her five children, John and his wife Donna Glenn of Centerville, Iowa. Her sister-in-law Karen Jones and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her husband, her parents , and siblings Betty and Wayne Harbold, Neil and Ilene Jones, Dale and Eleanor Jones, Donnie Jones, and Gary Jones and daughter-in –law Diana (Owen) Glenn, parents-in-law Roy and Rachel Glenn, sister–in–laws Juanita {Bobbie) Groomes and husband Dale, Iris and Edward Holmes, and Eleanor Carpenter and husband Clio.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 4th at Thomas Funeral home in Centerville, Iowa from 2:00-8:00 PM with the family present from 5:00-8:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, December 5th at Bessie's Barn, west of Centerville, Iowa, with Dr. Cameron Hindley officiating. Burial will be held at Crossroads Cemetery, west of Plano, Iowa, with Pastor Chad Combs officiating over the graveside services. Memorials have been established to the Little Flock Chapel or the Crossroads Cemetery.
