He was born on August 14, 1939 in Willoughby, Ohio to Rev. Erich and Olga Allwardt.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Ruth Allwardt Hanna.
He is survived by one brother, Rev. Theodore Allwardt (Marian) of Brookings, Oregon; three sisters, Dot Nuechterlein (Jim) of Valparaiso, Indiana, Ellen Fehr of Arnold, Missouri, and Alys Allwardt of Portland, Oregon; daughter Karen Bowman (Wes) and son James Allwardt, both of Springfield, Missouri, son Robert Allwardt of Panama City, Florida; grandchildren Jay, Marty, Drew, Megan, Marissa, and Anna, and many nieces and nephews.
Rick spent his career as a librarian, first in Worcester, Massachusetts and then until his retirement in Mansfield, Ohio. After retirement, he worked for several years as a driver's instructor before moving to Springfield. For the sixteen years that he lived in Springfield, he was involved in a wide variety of activities including church choir, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), the Seniors as Stars theater group, and Friends of the Library.
He especially enjoyed volunteering at his church in any capacity, from running errands to checking fire extinguishers to reading to children at the daycare. Some of his great passions included MSU Lady Bears’ basketball, driving anywhere and everywhere, Music Mission Kiev, travel abroad, and collecting music, beer labels, and magnets. He was never one to turn down a good beer, a good meal, or a good joke.
