Charles Wellman was born 18th June 1845, at Haverstock Hill, Hampstead, in the Parish of Islington, County of Middlesex, London, England. He married Sarah Jane Stride in St Mary, Islington on 17 Nov 1867. Sarah Jane was born November 3, 1848, at Crouch End Hill, in the Parish of Homsey, County of Middlesex in London. Charles’s father William was a brickmaker and in the 1861 census Charles, age 15, is listed as a laborer in the brickfield along with his other brothers. Charles and Sarah had 9 children. Their first son Charles William was born on 1st September 1868, at #52 Cromwell Road, Upper Halloway, in the Parish of Islington in London. The family then immigrated to Canada arriving in Quebec on 4 May 1871. Their daughter Jane Eliza was born on the 12th May 1872 at #32 Straun Street in Toronto. They then moved to Chicago where 1 year old Jane died. A second son Thomas James was born January 31 1874 at Wood Street in the 7th Ward in Chicago. Daughter Ada Jane was born on August 28, 1875 and her sister Nellie Deborah was born on June 10, 1877, both in the same place in Chicago. The family then moved to Canada where my grandmother Alice May was born on May 19 1880, at Selkirk Street in the city of Winnipeg, Parish of St. John, Manitoba. Three more daughters were born shortly after, Jessie Sarah in 1882, Mabel Sarah Maude in 1884 and Annie Maude in 1888. Their last child, Edward Stanley, was born 18th September 1891 at 399 Pritchard Street. The family is shown in the photo of their house taken at the turn of the century. Charles father William had been a brick layer in England and he continued his work after arriving in Winnipeg where he opened a brick making yard. After the father passed away, Charles, took over the business and obtained a contract to go to British Columbia and grade a bed for laying railway tracks in the area called the Cold Creek Section of the Kettle Valley Railroad. Charles is listed as contractor in Winnipeg in 1885 living with his wife Sarah. He died in Winnipeg on the 18th of January 1894 at the age of 48. He was interred in the Cathedral of St. John church yard, Block C. N 112 Lot 58. In the 1901 census, Sarah is a widow living in Winnipeg with daughters Nellie (22), Alice (20), Jessie (18), Mabel (16), Annie (14) and son Edward(10). In 1906 she is still living at 399 Pritchard Street with Mabel and Edward. In 1916 she is a roomer at the age of 65 until she died on Dec 10 1917 and was buried at Cathedral of St. John church yard in Winnipeg Block C Plot 57/58
