Obituary - Our much loved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Joy Knowlton, died peacefully in her home in Layton, Utah on July 16, 2007. She was born on December 10, 1930 in Long Beach, California.

Layton became her heart's home 56 years ago when she met and married her true love, Franklin W. Knowlton, and they settled their family here. Her home and everything in it reflects her love for life and her family. They raised six children together, and Joy taught them through example to stick together and support one another, to respect their father, and to enjoy spending time with each other.

Joy was a talented hand quilter. She relished every step of a quilt's creation...from choosing each fabric and laying out the pattern to putting the last tidy stitches in the binding. She taught quilting at Mormon Handicraft for many years. She was also a talented knitter. She created countless gifts for her children and grandchildren that had love, concern, and prayers entwined in every knit and purl. Joy delighted in finding fabric, dolls, yarn, shoes, and cashmere sweaters. Joy knew how to make even the smallest occasion special.

Every get together felt like a holiday when she walked in with a tray of homemade brownies and a sparkle in her eye. Always perfectly put together, she was the picture of beauty and graciousness. After Joy left a room, her perfume lingered in the air and her smile and warmth lingered in the hearts of her loved ones.

Joy loved to travel and explore, with Franklin by her side. Many years were spent together traveling to build bridges and moving and setting up each new home throughout Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming. They enjoyed their time in England as missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where Joy expanded her capacity to love. She often said that she gained much more than she gave as a missionary, but those whose lives she touched know otherwise.

Joy was loved by so many and she will be intensely missed. She will be mourned by quilters, ward members, missionaries, study-group members, brothers and sisters, and friends everywhere. We will all take comfort in our knowledge that our family is eternal and we will be with Joy again.

Preceded in death by infant daughter Mary Edwina, and her parents, Robert Monroe Plannette, and Feo Bess Plannette, and sister Gay Higgens.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 20, 2007 at 11 a.m. at the Holmes Creek Stake Center 125 So. Chapel Street, Layton. Friends and family may call Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist's Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road and Friday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the church. Interment, Kaysville City Cemetery.
