Robert Emerson Tjaden, 58, died Monday, July 16, in an accident on C70 near Woolstock, Iowa.

Memorial services are 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 19, 2007, at the Faith Lutheran Church near Palmer, with Paul Abens officiating. Burial is in Clinton-Garfield Cemetery in Rolfe, Iowa. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today, July 18, 2007, at the Powers Funeral Home in Pocahontas.

Robert Emerson Tjaden was born on June 15, 1949, to Emerson and Mildred (Onnen) Tjaden in Washington, Ill., and moved to Iowa as an infant. He attended Palmer Elementary School and graduated from Rolfe High School in 1967. He then attended Iowa State University for two years until he was drafted into the Army in 1969. He served at Fort Carson, Colorado for two years. He married Janis Ferguson on Sept. 1, 1973, in Havelock, Iowa. He farmed with his father, Emerson, for many years, raising hogs and sheep. In the 1990s, he began growing greenhouse tomatoes and other vegetables and sold his produce at many local farmer's markets including the "Tomato Bus," well known in Pocahontas, Iowa. Most recently, he owned his own truck and trailer, hauling feed for Gold-Eagle Co-op.

He also enjoyed volunteering his time to help others. He was a charter member and an elder at Faith Lutheran Church near Palmer, Iowa, and over many years was active in ministries such as church council, acting as worship leader, Sunday school and youth group. He also frequently lead nursing home services in the area.

He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife Janis of Gilmore City; three sons, Todd (Katie) and their children, Thomas and Allison, Ames, Iowa, Brian (Nicole) and their son Cade, Waukee, Iowa, Adam, Churdan; his mother Mildred Tjaden, Gilmore City, Iowa; three brothers, James (Gloria) Tjaden, Badger, Iowa, Larry (Jane) Tjaden, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Bill Tjaden, Laurel, Neb.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Emerson Tjaden.
