Obituary
The funeral of Mrs. Martha Steele, a pioneer settler of Edgewood, who died Christmas morning, was held at the Methodist Church in this place Friday forenoon, the 27th, Rev. True, assisted by Rev. Turner, having charge of the service. The house was well filled with sorrowing relatives and friends who had gathered there to pay the last sad respects to one they had known and loved so long. The remains were laid to rest in the Edgewood Cemetery.

Martha Annis was born in the State of New York January 20th, 1844, and had she lived until the 20th of the present month would have been sixty-nine years of age. She moved with her parents to Iowa in 1855, settling at what was then called "Yankee Settlement", now Edgewood, and has resided here ever since.

She was married to W.W. Steele on the third day of October,1866, and to them were born two children, one of whom died in infancy, the other being W.E. Steele, who now resides at Cedar Rapids, enjoying the reputation of being one of the best young attorneys in the Parlor City.

The deceased leaves to mourn her death a husband, son, two grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. A.O. Seward and Miss Susie J. Annis, and a large circle of acquaintances. She had been a member of the Methodist Church and has been anxiously waiting the call of her Saviour to relieve her from the bodily pain she has been called to bear for the many years past.

Those from out of town who were in attendance at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Edmunds of Terrill, Iowa; Mrs. Merrills of Anamosa and Mrs. Ella Severance of Frederick, South Dakota.Father: Hiram Carter Annis
Mother: Mary Oakley
Spouse: William W Steele
Married: 3 Oct 1866 in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin
