Bio by B. Bradford

Elizabeth Angell is a proven daughter of Charles Angell and Sybella (maiden name unknown) born on the Angell Plantation in Sauratown, Surry Co., (now Pine Hall Stokes Co.) NC. She was named in both of her parents' Wills respectively. She married Henry Cook about 1768 and raised a family on a large plantation of 600 acres located on Belews Creek of Stokes and the Reeds Creek of neighboring Guilford Co. Records showed that Henry Cook was a slave owner and their names and ages were documented in the Estate of Henry Cook. Henry died in 1822. He was a wealthy plantation owner with an Estate valued over $6,000 which went into probate. The children came forward protesting of their father's Will claiming he was not of sound mind and requested that they be named as a party of interest in the Estate. It appears Elizabeth did not receive much and the court allotted her one year's provision for support (see document), some items of which she had to purchase including a pair of shoes and stockings.

Elizabeth and Henry had the following children who were mentioned in the Estate records:

1. Cornelius (md. Susan) - moved to Gallia, OH

2. Judith (md. 1st cousin Berry Angell s/o Rev. John Angell and Mary Griner) - moved to Gallia, OH

3. Elizabeth (md. William Garlic on Sept 15, 1798, Stokes Co., NC) - moved to Guyan Twp., Gallia, OH after the War. He was a Veteran of the War of 12.

4. Sibella (md. Abner Knight)

5. Anne: b. abt. 1775 – d. October 22, 1856. Moved to Sangamon, Illinois. Married William Knight on Dec 12, 1799, in Stokes Co., NC Bondsman: George Cook, Witness: H. B. Dobson. William Knight was b. abt 1770 in Stokes Co., NC and d. May 24, 1824 in Cabell Co, VA (now West Virginia). After his death, Anne and her children moved out to Illinois. She is buried at Bethel Cemetery, Woodside Chatham, Sangamon County, IL.

About 1815, Cornelius and his family and his sister, Judy and Berry Angel left NC along with his two brothers Joshua and Henry Angel and settled in Gallia Co., OH and noted in the 1820 and 1830 censuses.
