BIO CHARLES ANGELL- by B. Bradford-Pytel updated 11-2-2019
Charles is the proven son of Charles Angell Sr. (1730 – 1775) and Sybella (unknown maiden name) (1730 – 1811) and born on his parents' Plantation located in Sauratown (Pine Hall) of former Surry Co. which now falls into Stokes Co., NC. He was named in both of his parents' Wills respectively and was the co-executor (w/ mother) of his father's Will. His father bequeathed him the land on the north side of the Dan River adjacent to Nobel Ladd's Plantation and brother Lawrence and mother kept the land on the South Side of the Dan River on Bellews Creek where the original house stood.

Charles married Sarah Davies and they had 10 children together all born on the Angell Plantation. After the death of mother Sybella in 1811, brother Lawrence who was taking care of Sybella and the southside of the Plantation decided to move out west to Missouri where other Angell relatives migrated. It appears he deeded to Charles the southern parcel (original homestead of Charles Sr. an Sybella) which expanded his parcel to over 800 acres. Census records showed that Charles kept 1 female slave throughout his life and his wife, died before him after 1830.

Charles was born about 1754. There is no record to definitively prove his date of birth but in the 1800 Stokes Co., NC Census, he is noted over age 45 putting his birth year at least 1755 if not earlier. His death date of June 1834 is based on the Estate papers in which his son Charles, the Administrator, stated in a Petition to the Court dated December 1834, that "Charles Angel departed this life intestate in June last." Also, in the Estate Papers, there is an invoice from Dr. Andrew Bowman (1772 – 1845) for $70.07 for treatment he provided Charles from December 1833 through April 1834. Charles was about 80 years old when he became seriously ill in the winter of 1833 and Dr. Bowman of Germanton, Stokes Co., NC made several trips to the Angell Plantation to give care to Charles. We do not know his illness but the therapy detailed in the invoice included administering cathartic pills and mixture to stimulate evacuation of the bowels; diaphoretic to induce sweating which acts as a coolant, reducing the body temperature; hydragogue powder which causes copious watery discharges from the bowels, Paregoric tincture of opium and creme of tartar to relieve diarrhea and pain in the digestive system and a solution of Quinine for malaria.

At the time of his death the Charles Angell Plantation was 808 acres in two parcels: One at 150 acres on both sides of Germantown Road valued $225.37 and the other 658 acres on the waters of Belews Creek valued $1,659.50. Because he died without a Will, the court had to appoint an Administrator, Charles Jr. and have the land surveyed and valued for division. Sons Charles Jr. (Admin) and Joseph attested they already received in advanced their full share before the death of their father and they did not make a claim against the estate. Samuel was advanced land in part and claims a residual balance against the Estate . The court determined that the lawful heirs will receive their portion as follows: John Hutchings and wife Eleanor (Angel); Seth Starbuck and wife Elizabeth (Angel); Silas W. Angel; Mary (Angel) Ladd; Jehu McMinn and wife Rebecca (Angel); Benjamin Angel dec'd heirs; Sabitha Young dec'd heirs; Samuel Angel. Total aggregate of land value is $1,884.87 to be divided into 8 equal part shares at $235.60 per share.
The Estate of Charles Angel is 37 pages long loaded with details of his personal belongings and the heirs of his fortune.
