He is survived by his wife Kathy of 26 years; daughter Maria; grandson Jarred; brother John and his wife Debbie; sister La Vonna Jeanne; and the best friends in the World.
Joe graduated from Sandia High School Class of 1964 and was recognized as "Who's Who a Crest Honor that he received as a Junior and Senior. Joe served as President of the Celt's Boys Service Club, a representative to New Mexico Boys State and Co-President of the S. Club. Joe excelled in sports and was the President of Sandia High School Lettermen. Joe lettered in football and baseball. He was All-City in baseball as a Junior, second team All-City, Lions All-City football and All-Star Football Team Member. Joe was also a member of the Sandia High School State Championship Basketball Team in 1962.
Joe's athletic abilities continued at UNM where he played football and baseball. Joe is a Lifetime Member of the UNM Athletic Alumni.
While at UNM, Dr. Duffy also became a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity where he made loyal friends who he cherished throughout his lifetime.
Joe was also a proud Veteran and served honorably in the New Mexico National Air Guard during the Vietnam era as an Airman First Class Fire Protection Specialist.
Dr. Duffy graduated in 1977 from the Southern California College of Optometry. As a Doctor of Optometry, Dr. Duffy served as the 1983-1984 President of the New Mexico Optometric Association. Dr. Duffy was a member of Omega Epsilon Phi International Optometric Fraternity and in 2013 he was recognized by the American Optometric Association and the New Mexico Optometric Association for his loyal and dedicated service to the optometric profession serving over 40 years in both associations. As he was often called, "Dr. Joe'" was instrumental in advancing the profession of optometry throughout his entire professional career and was well regarded by his peers.
Dr. Joe had a passion for working on old cars that started as a child visiting junk yards with his dad. Joe was an active member of the Classic Chevy Club of Albuquerque. Joe also served on the Unser Racing Community Board in 2000-2001.
In 1996 Dr. Duffy was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. In 1992 Joe made a valiant run for NM State Senate in District 19. Joe remained active in Democratic politics until shortly before he passed away asking his visitors and listing on his last wishes "vote Democrat".
