Burned to Death
A Sad Accident Which Happened at Sidney Friday.
Champaign County Gazette Wednesday October 25, 1893 page 11

Sidney, Oct. 21 – [Special] – Mrs. Clark, aged mother of W. D. Clark, who lives about a mile northwest of this village, was burned so seriously yesterday afternoon that she died a few hours later. The facts, as told in the village, are these: Mrs. Clark was sitting by the stove in the sitting room, the rest of the family being at work in the kitchen. They heard her scream, and rushed in found her enveloped in flames. They set to work pulling the burning garments off, but could not get them off until the old lady was fatally burned. The accident occurred at 4 o’clock in the afternoon and she died at 7 o’clock, in great agony. She was horribly burned, but was conscious until within ten minutes of her death. She was 91 years old and very feeble. She was a favorite in the neighborhood and her sudden death has cast a gloom. It had been intended that Mr. and Mrs. Clark would celebrate their twenty first wedding anniversary Saturday and a very large party of friends had been invited in to feast, but this accident brought it to a sad ending. It is not yet settled, but it is thought that the funeral will occur Monday forenoon.

Mr. Clark is a prosperous farmer of Sidney township and owns 250 acres in Section 8.
