First Burial at Mission San Luís Obispo de Tolosa
The native Chumash names of Francisco and his parents were not recorded by Fr. Joseph Cavaller. He was about 8 or 9 years old and near death when his parents requested his baptism into the Roman Catholic Church on October 1, 1772 at the newly consecrated Mission San Luís Obispo de Tolosa (SLO Baptism 00001). Cabo de escolta (Corporal of the guard) Antonio Alexo Gonzales stepped forward to be his Godfather. Francisco died just three days later and was buried in the mission cemetery October 4, 1772 (SLO Death 00001). Like most Native Americans of his day, Francisco did not have a surname.
