Florence M. Powell, 98, Fargo, ND formerly of Valley City, ND passed away at Villa Maria in Fargo on November 2, 2019. Visitation for Florence will be held at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Valley City on Thursday, November 7 from 5-7 PM with a prayer service beginning at 7. The memorial service will be on Friday, November 8 at 11 AM. Inurnment will be in Woodbine Cemetery, Valley City.

Florence Marion Anderson was born June 18, 1921, the second child of six born to Fritchop and Marie (Gafkjen) Anderson of Dazey, ND. She had five older half siblings as well. Florence grew up on the family farm and went to rural school. When she entered the seventh grade, she joined her older siblings and went to College High in Valley City, ND to finish her education. After graduating in 1939, she went to Josef’s School of Hair Design in Fargo, ND. She took on the job training in Marion, ND and opened a shop in Hannaford, ND when she had her manager’s license. This was during the time when she had to get water from an outdoor pump. Stale beer was used for setting lotion and egg shampoos were popular.

In 1943, she and a friend from Hannaford went out to Bremington, WA to visit friends from the Dazey area. She got a job on the naval base fixing hair for the officer’s wives. It was there that she met her future husband, Robert Earl Powell. They were married in May of 1944. When Bob was discharged from the Navy, they moved back to ND and settled in Valley City, where all but one of their six children was born.

They lived four years in Aneta, ND where strong friendships were made. Jana, the youngest, was born in Northwood, ND during this time. Florence and the kids returned to Valley City to be nearer to family. She worked for the Sheyenne Care Center in the salon and for Barnes County Social Services as their very first home health aide. Her job was helping train single women to plan meals on a budget, clean their homes and later worked with Erma Overby, the county nurse, assisting with physical therapy. Florence worked there until she was 75 years old.

She loved to cook and sew, going to craft shows and keeping her Norwegian background alive. Florence loved to travel and took many trips, the ones to Australia and Norway were among her favorites.

She lived with her daughter, Julie, in Fargo for 19 years. For 5 years, she went to Rosewood on Broadway’s adult daycare. Here she made many good friends with the staff and drivers with the senior rides. Sometimes she’d ride for two or more hours just visiting with the other passengers and seeing the sites in the Fargo area. She lived at Ecumen Evergreens Assisted Living for a few years before a fall at the age of 96 required her to move to Villa Maria. She loved the staff there so much, that became her home until she passed away.

Florence is survived by her children, Robert, Don (Sue), William (Nance), Julie (Doug) Froemke, Richard (Heide), and Jana (Gary) Thomson; 13 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; a great great grandson; a sister-in-law, Doloris Anderson; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Willy, Roy, Fritz, Arnold, and Norman; sisters, Doris, Mildred, and Gladys; a brother-in-law, Dale Thorson; and sisters-in-law, Mabel, Bernice, Amy and Edna.
