She grew up during the Depression in Wisconsin, and later met her future husband, Fred D. Paleologo, at a USO dance in Chicago. Fred left to fight in the pacific theater in WW II and Lena wrote to him daily. She was a wonderful letter writer as many know. After his return from the war, Fred and Lena were married on January 2, 1946 at St. Andrews Church in Le Roy, Wisconsin. Both Lena and Fred would recall going to the church in a horse drawn carriage because of the snow. Immediately after marrying they moved to Fred's home town, Jersey City, New Jersey. Lena was welcomed into Fred's large family and settled into the hustle and bustle of city life. They lived in a small apartment where Lena sewed curtains for the windows and made it a home. Lena was a post-war wife, mother and homemaker until a major illness struck Fred and Lena became the breadwinner to support the family. She was an excellent caregiver and Fred recovered. They moved to Houston in 1970 for Fred's work and started a new life in Texas. Lena took up art, and became an avid painter in oils, selling some of her paintings, but mostly painting for friends and family. Her artwork graces many homes across the country and is a constant reminder of her talent and generosity.
She loved gardening and would cut flowers for Fred every day. She greatly enjoyed a long walk, nature and the outdoors. She had many treasured memories of her travels with Fred and visiting family. In typical Italian grandmother style, she could lay out a holiday dinner spread to outdo the biggest appetites. Her greatest joy, however, came from spending time with her family. She was always proud of her children, their spouses and her granddaughters. She had an unwavering faith and steadfast love of family and her actions spoke louder than words. Lena's kindness and gentle spirit will be forever remembered and sorely missed.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 53 years, Fred D. Paleologo, her parents, Domenic and Theresa Dalle Nogare, her sister, Mary Dalle Nogare, and her brother, John Dalle Nogare. She is survived by her daughter, Elaine Paleologo, son-in-law, Vincent Bustamante, and their daughter Sara Bustamante, her son, Fred P. Paleologo, daughter-in-law, Deborah Paleologo, and their daughters Amanda and Alana Paleologo. She is also survived by her sister, Bena Campagna, and a large extended family.
