Howell, Eleanor Elizabeth, died unexpectedly in her sleep at her home in Raleigh, NC on October 22, 2019.

She is survived by her parents, Barbara Spetnagel Howell and David Floyd Howell of Mt. Juliet, TN, and sisters, Virginia Howell of Smyrna, GA, and Rebecca Crew of Baltimore, MD.

She is also survived by brother-in-law Darin Crew, niece Eloise Crew, and nephew Henry Crew, uncle and aunt, Ted and Nancy Spetnagel of Smyrna, GA, and cousins Allen Spetnagel and Elizabeth Crowe. She was predeceased by her grandparents, Ollie Floyd Howell, Jr., Eleanor Sue Bush Howell, Theodore Scott Spetnagel, and Lucille Elizabeth Stuckey Spetnagel.
Eleanor was born July 12, 1972 in Nashville, TN. Raised in Mt. Juliet, TN, she was a member of the Mt. Juliet High School Band of Gold and participated in a People to People Exchange Program to the Soviet Union in the summer of 1989, where she studied astronomy. Eleanor attended the Tennessee Governor’s’ School for Sciences and was Valedictorian of the Mt. Juliet High School Class of 1990.

Eleanor attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, as a Harrison Scholar. She majored in Mathematics/ Statistics and Chemistry, played intramural broomball, was a member of Phi Mu sorority, and spent a semester at the John E. Dolibois European Center in Luxembourg. Eleanor also completed a Master’s Degree in Statistics at Miami.
Eleanor moved to Raleigh, NC where she had a National Science Fellowship at North Carolina State University. Following her studies, she began working at the North Carolina State Center for Health Statistics, where she became Director in 2014. Eleanor also earned a Certificate in Core Public Health Concepts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was active in health statistics professional organizations.

Eleanor was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Raleigh, where she served many roles over the years, including elder, deacon, hand bell choir member, Circle leader, and middle school youth advisor. As a lifelong Presbyterian, she loved the connectional nature of the denomination. She worked at Holston Presbytery Camp in Banner Elk, North Carolina for three summers in college, where she herself had been a camper for many years, developing a love for canoeing and a talent for building campfires, and finding pure joy in singing and fellowship.
Eleanor loved traveling and genealogy and often combined these two interests. Reading was one of her passions, and she was a long-time participant in a book club at Quail Ridge Books. She also was a fan of the Carolina Hurricanes and the Carolina Railhawks. A self-described music geek, she enjoyed diverse musical genres but was particularly fond of the Modern Rock format and connected with fellow music fans through the online message boards of WOXY.
Eleanor was an enthusiastic participant in the multi-player mobile online strategy game, Ingress, where she was known as Agent EllaMinnowPea and served the Ingress community through its Vanguard Program as a player advocate, collaborating with the game developer company, Niantic. Ingress players like Eleanor helped develop the better-known Niantic games - PokΓ©mon Go and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.
A memorial service will be held at 2PM on Saturday, November 2, 2019 at First Presbyterian Church, 112 S. Salisbury Street, Raleigh, NC, followed by visitation. Interment will be held Saturday, November 9, 2019 at 12 noon at Mt. Juliet Memorial Gardens. Visitation will follow at First Presbyterian Church, Lebanon, TN on Saturday, November 9, 2019, from 2-4 p.m.
