He was a forward for five seasons (1958 to 1961, 1962 to 1964) in the National Basketball Association, with the Cincinnati Royals, Chicago Zephyrs, Baltimore Bullets and Detroit Pistons. In the course of his career Staverman shared the court with Hall of Fame teammates Oscar Robertson, Maurice Stokes, Jack Twyman, Jerry Lucas and Walt Bellamy. During the 1964 playoffs, Staverman had a 5.3 points per game average. After retiring as a player, he served as the first coach in Indiana Pacers franchise history from 1967 to 1969, when the team played in the American Basketball Association. He later coached the Kansas City Kings for the 1977-1978 season. In 265 career NBA games as a player, Staverman scored 1,237 points with 1,019 rebounds. His coaching record is 58 wins, 74 losses.
