THE PARIS NEWS, Jul. 29, 2005: ’Joy Merle Robinson Stephens, 83, of El Centro, Calif., passed away Thursday, July 21, 2005. She was taken to El Centro Regional Medical Center on Wednesday, July 20, and diagnosed with a brain hemorrhage. She returned home on July 21, with hospice care. She was surrounded by her loved ones when she passed away. Funeral services are set for 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 1, at Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Calk and the Rev. Jerry Moore officiating. Burial follows in Georgia Cemetery. The family receives friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. The family welcomes relatives and friends for lunch at the Tigertown Community Center following graveside services. She was born July 20, 1922, in Direct. She graduated from Honey Grove High School in 1939. She attended East Texas State College, Commerce, majoring in elementary education, receiving a teaching certificate from State of Texas in 1941. She was a member of the East Texas State Teachers College Symphony Orchestra. She played the viola. She began her teaching career at Georgia in 1941. She taught first through third grades at Tigertown and Forest Hill schools in Lamar County from 1942-1945. She took flying lessons prior to marrying Brice R. Stephens on Aug. 31, 1942. He passed away in May 1982. She and her husband were farmers and ranchers in Lamar County. She accepted a position to teach sixth grade at Ben Hulse Elementary School, Imperial, Calif., from 1957-1960. She received a bachelor’s degree in science from East Texas State College in Commerce. She taught fifth grade at Hidalgo Elementary School in Brawley, Calif., from 1962-1963. She taught fourth grade at Margaret Hedrick Elementary School, El Centro, from 1964-1970. She was president of the California Teachers Association Imperial County Branch in 1966 and received the Teacher of the Year award for Imperial County in 1966. She pursued a master’s degree in education at San Diego State, Calexico, Calif. In 1976, she moved to Texas. She received a certificate of religious teaching from the Assemblies of God in 1982. In 1984 she returned to the Imperial Valley where she resided until her death. From 1992-1997 she was director of human resources for Helping Hands Pro Home Health and Hospice, in El Centro. She was active in church work and a hospice volunteer until 2002 when her health began to fail. She was a friend to many and a devoted mother and grandmother. She loved reading and gardening. She was preceded in death by a baby sister, Troy, in 1923; her mother, Nettie Jewel Robinson, on Aug. 30, 1945; her father, Joel Grant Robinson, on March 28, 1971; a brother, Kimer Robinson, in May 1971, and a step-mother, Katherine ‘Mama Kate’ Robinson Sessions, in 1987. She is survived by three children, a son, Randell Stephens and daughter-in-law, Rickie, of Direct; two daughters, Linda Marrs and son-in-law, David, and Tena Hussey and son-in-law, David, all of El Centro; nine grandchildren, Dr. Heath Marrs and wife, Cara, of Hays, Kan., Cody Stephens and wife, Rachel, of Paris, Neal Marrs of Indio, Calif., J. Todd Marrs and wife, Christina, of Palm Desert, Calif., Matt Rea of Chico, Calif., Rancie Stephens of Arlington and Lucas Rea, Sarah and Clinton Hussey all of El Centro; three great-granddaughters, Clarissa Rea of El Centro, Arden Marrs of Palm Desert and Cailin Bell of Arlington; and a great-grandson, Gavin Marrs of Hays, Kan.; one brother, Dugan Robinson and sister-in-law, Helen, of Ensenada, Mexico; three sisters, Hazel Robinson of El Centro, Margaret Cuttrell of Paris, and Mary Lee Stone of Dallas; four nephews; and five nieces. A great number of relatives and friends will mourn her death. Pallbearers are the six grandsons, Dr. Heath Marrs, Cody Stephens, Neal Marrs, J. Todd Marrs, Matt Rea and Lucas Rea.′
