Aged Lady Summoned
Mrs Josephine Hudson Resided in St Helena for 70 years
Mrs Josephine Hudson a dearly loved resident of St Helena, died at her home, Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock after an illness of a little more than a week. Mrs Hudson was stricken with paralysis on the 15th inst., and although everything possible was done for her relief, her advanced age made all efforts unavailing and she gradually sank until the faint spark of life was extinguished.
Mrs Josephine Hudson was aged 82 years. She was the wife of the late Martin S Hudson and mother of Perry C Hudson of Monterey, Ralph C Hudson and Miss Carrie A Hudson of St Helena, William H Hudson of San Diego, and Leland F Hudson of Oakland.
Mrs Hudson was the daughter of the late Capt Christopher and Clarinda Mills and was born in Peoria, ILL February 8, 1844. She came to California with her parents in 1856 via Mississippi river steamer to New Orleans, thence to the Isthmus of Panama, where the natives carried the children across the Isthmus on their backs thence via steamer to San Francisco.
The late Christopher Mills operated a river steamer service between San Francisco, Sacramento and Marysville and shortly after the family arrived in San Francisco they moved to Marysville. later coming to St Helena and residing at the old family home on the banks of Sulphur Creek, the present home of Christopher Mills.
Mrs Hudson was a sister of Mrs Lela Cook; Mrs Frances Nosler; and Christopher Mills
also of the late Mrs Frances York and Mrs Ella G Anderson, all of whom have spent most of their days in St Helena.
Mrs Hudson was one of the few remaining pioneers and early settlers coming to Napa valley and spending her lifetime in St Helena. She was one of the oldest members of the Presbyterian Church in St Helena and a life long friend of Rev James Mitchell , her devoted pastor.
Mrs Hudson was a lover of her home and family and spent a great portion of her time in her garden and among her flowers.
The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the undertaking parlors of
Mercier & Parmalee. Rev Walter C Subke officiating. There was a large attendance of sorrowing relatives and friends, the latter including many old settlers. The floral tributes were many and very beautiful. Among the set pieces was one from the Southern Pacific Co.
The pallbearers were A A Ives; W H Smith; Joseph Galewsky; W B Bell ; John C Money ; and George Herdle.
At the St Helena cemetery the last sad rites were performed by Rev W C Subke and the remains were tenderly lowered to their last resting place and the grave was completely covered with the flowers the deceased loved so well.
