David M. Beard, 73
MUNCIE - David M. Beard, 73, Muncie, died Friday afternoon at Ball Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Muncie, the son of Elma V. McFerron Beard and Myles R. Beard. David grew up in the Muncie area and graduated from Muncie Central High School in 1947. He graduated from the International Barber College and attended Ball State University. Mr. Beard retired from the Muncie Post Office after working 25 years as a letter carrier. He also worked in several barber shops in the Muncie area, and owned Dave's Barber Shop for 7 years. Mr. Beard was an Army veteran of the Korean War and served in the Indiana National Guard.
His memberships include the Shawnee Heights Baptist Church, where he had been a member since 1950. He served as moderator and chairman on the Board of Deacons, chairman of the Board of Ushers, and he was the publicity director and was president of the Friendship Church School class. He was past master and chaplain of Muncie Lodge 433, F &AM; New Castle Chapter 50, Royal Arch Masons; New Castle Council 53, Cryptic Masons; and New Castle Commandery 44, Knights Templar. He also served as Royal Arch Deputy, Grand Chapter, Royal Arch Masons of Indiana; Edmund Burke Ball Chapter 15069 of the DeMolay, as well as several other Masonic organizations. He was a member of Third Age Theater and the National Association of Letter Carriers, and he was a volunteer for the Minnetrista Cultural Center.
Survivors include his wife, Delores Mongrain Beard, whom he married June 28, 1953,; a son, Donald Beard (wife: Sonya), Muncie; his daughter-in-law, Mary Walker Neil, Haskell, Texas; a sister-in-law, Lucille Beard, Muncie; six grandchildren, Chloe, Ashley, Daniel, Michelle, Angela and Tommi; and a great-granddaughter, Cheyenne.
He was preceded in death by a son, David M. Beard, in 1990; and two brothers, John Beard in 1983, and Harold Beard in 1996.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in The Meeks Mortuary Chapel with Dr. Dennis Hammons officiating. Burial will follow in Tomlinson Cemetery with military rites by Delaware County Honor Guard. Friends may call at The Meeks Mortuary 4-8 p.m. Monday or 1 hour before services on Tuesday. A Masonic memorial service will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday and a Knights Templer Memorial Service will be at 6 p.m. Monday.
