Born December 10, 1924, in Delta, Utah, the seventh of 8 children born to Brigham Bosworth of Kaysville, Utah, and Myrtle Morgan of Layton, Utah. He was predeceased by his seven siblings.
He spent his childhood playing and working on a 400 acre wheat farm.
He served in the U.S. Navy after graduating from high school in 1943.
He trained as a Morse Code Radio Operator “one of those dit-dit-dit-daw-dit guys” as he would say, at Farragut, Idaho Naval Training Station, and was assigned to Landing Ship Tank (LST) 693, which he joined in Jeffersonville, Indiana. They sailed down the Ohio and Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico, through the Panama Canal to San Diego, then on to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. After outfitting and provisioning in Hawaii, the 693 embarked with a large convoy for the Eniwetok, Marshall Island staging area, eventually making their way to the Philippines.
The huge Philippine campaign, launched on October 20, 1944, and the 693 continued to participate in and support allied landings on Leyte and four other islands. Those battles in the region devastated the Imperial Japanese Navy and cut off their supply lines.
After the Leyte operations, the 693 sailed to Okinawa, where Zane met up on shore with his brother, Bill, who was serving on another ship. During that time a massive typhoon hit Okinawa and almost all of the ships evacuated the harbor for the open sea. Bill made it to his ship before it took off, but Zane didn’t, and his ship sailed without him, leaving him to fend for himself for a week. The 693 returned a week later to find Okinawa in shambles, with ships piled on the beaches and buildings flattened. Zane was able to rejoin his crew at that time.
After the war he returned to the U.S.A., where he met and married Janice Greaves in Salt Lake City. In the following years, he and Janice had two boys; Hal and Mark. His young family also spent time in Idaho Falls, Idaho, where he worked for a heavy equipment dealer..
In 1953, on a family vacation to San Diego, when comparing the weather in Idaho to Southern California, he thought: “If you are going to be poor, you might as well be warm!”. While in San Diego on that trip, he found a job in the aerospace industry, and Southern California is where he stayed! He made a good life in San Diego, having 2 daughters and another son before relocating to Orange County where he continued working in the aerospace industry. He and Janice parted ways in the late 60s.
In 1971 he met and married Marlene Dulgarian, and they enjoyed many happy years of travel and adventures after they retired.
An accomplished harmonica player, his other hobbies included golf, bowling, pool and sailing. He and some buddies built a fleet of 8-foot sabot sailboats! He also partnered with some friends on a 32 foot wooden sail boat and enjoyed taking the kids out sailing.
Zane is survived by his five children, Hal(Carilyn), Mark, Lorrie(Bob Mengel), Todd(Shelly) and Nancy, as well as Marlene’s daughter, Linda. Also among his remaining loved ones are his 14 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and lots of good friends.
