Born in Woodston, Peterborough, James was a butcher for the Cooperative Society and lived in Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire.

His attestation papers are dated 10th March 1913 when he was 17 years and 5 months old. He was declared fit on 17th March that year.

James served with the 1st Cambridgeshire Regiment from 19th July 1913 to 10th June 1915. He made a soldier's Will (13 Feb 1915) leaving his estate to his father (also James Marriott) of 7, East Delph, Whittlesey. He was in France from the 14th Feb 1915 until 29th April 1915.

Medical records show that between 17th and 29th April 1915 he was diagnosed with Laryngitis, then Bronchitis and finally "Tubercle of Lung". A medical report of 17th May 1915 says that he had started to display symptoms of a cough, shortness of breath and night sweats two months earlier whilst in France. His death certificate says he had had Phthisis Pulmonaris for 4 months.

He was declared permanently unfit for both Home Service and Light Service. Statement 20(a) says that he became unfit on active service.

He was first listed on the CWGC website in 2022 in the United Kingdom Book of Remembrance having been submitted as a worthy cause via "In from the Cold" (www.infromthecold.org)
