Lorraine (Westberg) Carlson, age 96, of Ogilvie, passed away at St. Clare Living Community of Mora on August 23, 2016.
Lorraine was born on Friday, August 13, 1920 to Arvid, a Swedish immigrant, and Hilda (Larson) Westberg in Prentice, Wisconsin. She always considered Friday the 13th her “lucky day.” Her father was killed in a logging accident when she was just four years old. When her mother remarried, years later, it was to another Swedish immigrant, Claus Johnson, who brought the family to farm in Brunswick, Minnesota. She completed her schooling, first to eighth grade at Brunswick School and graduated, at sixteen, from Mora High School. Years later all of her daughters attended Ogilvie High School, a bit of rivalry in the air at the “goat game.”
Working as a nanny/housekeeper for a Minneapolis family, for one year, offered her the chance to travel (Memphis, Tennessee) and gain confidence in herself. She returned to school, working for Doctor and Mrs. Nordman, to earn money for books. Normal training was completed and a teaching certificate awarded in 1939. Lorraine taught at Hawthorne School in Brunswick township for two years, all eight grades, twenty five students.
Lorraine started working for Honeywell, a munitions manufacturer, to earn extra money for more schooling, however, she met and soon married Haldo Carlson, a Swedish immigrant, November 22, 1941. Falling in love changed the course of her life! In 1943 they moved to rural Ogilvie with their first child, Carol Ann. Around 1944 she was teaching at Coin School, a year later she taught at Brunswick School for four years. 1947 brought the birth of a son, James, who only lived for one month. When Karen was born in 1950 it was especially welcoming, she was healthy and happy. Kathy was born in 1955, joy and blessings, three girls!
1957 was the year of change and challenge; she started a career at the Medical Clinic and for 25 years pursed lab work (including X-ray tech), filing insurance claims and purchasing the clinic’s supplies. 62 years of age brought semi-retirement and the opportunity to set her own hours! Lorraine started housecleaning and continued until she was 82. She wasn’t “all work and no play” read her statistics.
Lorraine loved sports, a women’s softball team in the 1940’s, she played in 25 national bowling tournaments, skied the Vasaloppet for 25 years, and golfed for more than 50 years. Golf clubs were expensive, she worked at Fish Lake Pavilion on Saturday nights for weeks to earn enough for one club at a time. Lorraine played piano by ear and was Haldo’s favorite dance partner. She was a youth leader at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Brunswick for 25 years, leading camping and canoeing expeditions in the Boundary Waters. When “Sunset Hill” was open for tubing, even more people, than her family, took pleasure in her chocolate chip cookies.
The snowmobilers, the card partiers, and the “Old Timers” met, laughed, created musical memories and shared a meal whenever possible. We were lucky to have the original tomboy “Larry” in our midst.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hilda and Arvid Westberg, loving husband Haldo, brothers Ray and Russell, and an infant son James.
Lorraine is survived by her three daughters: Carol Ann (Stu) Varner of North Pole, AK, Karen (Jim) Psyck of Coon Rapids, Kathy (Dave) Undem of Mora; six grandchildren: Kurk Varner of Fairbanks, AK, Marcus (Dan Reynen) Varner of Key West, FL, Peter (Jennifer) Psyck of Blaine, Melissa (Roger) Campbell of Fargo, ND, Kjersten Undem of Ames, IA, Kelsie Undem of Mora; three great grandchildren: Cole and Kyle Campbell of Fargo, ND, Mike Nielsen of Minneapolis; two siblings: Alice Strandlund and Carl Johnson and dear sister-in-law Dee Johnson; many beloved nieces and nephews (great and grand!), other relatives and many friends.
