Death of Mrs. Abigail J. Alvord

Mrs Abigail J. Alvord passed away Christmas night at the home of Mrs. J. H. Price where she had made her home for some time.

Mrs. Alvord was born in Nunda 89 years ago but had spent the greater part of her life in the town of Mt. Morris. She leaves six children, Mrs. Mary Frost of Mt. Morris, Phineas of Batavia, George of Pavilion, Mrs. Julia Gilbert of Long Island, James of Mt. Morris and Burt of Saranac Lake.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p. m. at the home of Mrs. Price with burial in the Mt. Morris cemetery.

Mrs. Abigail Alvord Dies at Nunda at 89

Mount Morris, Jan. 13 - Mrs. AbiIgsil J. Alvord, one of the oldest residents of this town died at Nunda, following a short illness, aged 89 years. She was born in Nunda, Oct. 29, 1839 and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Warner Daniels and the last member of a family of nine children.

Mrs. Alvord received her early education in Nunda and Perry Academy, after which she taught the district school several years, at one time teaching in Smoky Hollow on the Gardeau Reservation. she saw the first engine pass over the wooden bridge at Portage. Of her girlhood associates only two remain. Mrs. Miriam Daniels of La Grange and Mrs. Martha Howard Lincoln of Nunda. On December 25, 1857, she married Martin V. Alvord. Nearly all of her married life was spent on the Alvord homestead. Since the death of her husband, May 8 , 1899, she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. F. W. Frost of Creek Road. She was known in the community as "Grandma" Alvord, where she enjoyed a large circle of friends and relatives, old and young She united with the Baptist Church at La Grange when a girl and after her marriage she became a member of the Brooksgrove Church. During he short residence in Nunda, she united with the M. E. Church, of which she was a member at the time of her death.

She leaves six children, Mrs. Fred W. Frost of Mount Morris, Phineas Alvord of Batavia, George Alvord of Pavilion, Mrs. John Gilbert of East Hampton, James Alvord of Mt. Morris and Burt Alvord of Saranac Lake, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
