On August 27, 1934, Alfred Fonville, Sr., and Willie Simmons Fonville brought forth their second child, Alfred Fonville. He was born and raised in New Bern, North Carolina with his parents and four siblings. Alfred attended New Bern public schools and graduated from West Creek High School in 1952. His brothers John, Haywood and Elbert, preceded him in death. His knowledge of Christ began as a child in a home that fostered the importance of loving and serving the Lord. Alfred was converted and filled with the baptism of the Holy Ghost in 1951 at the New Bern House of God, Which is the Church of the Living God, The Pillar and Ground of the Truth Without Controversy, under the leadership of the late Elder Andrew Simmons. On January 25, 1955, Alfred enlisted in the United States Navy where he served his country for 23 years. During his tenure, he was promoted to Chief Petty Officer. While attending a House of God Church New York State Assembly, Alfred met Margie Lee Torrence. They were married on November 24, 1958. Alfred and Margie brought forth six children; Alfred (who preceded them in death), Hilda, Lionel, Darryl, Harold and David. For 43 years, Alfred was completely devoted to his wife Margie, until her death in 2001. After marrying Margie, Alfred moved to Atlantic City, New Jersey. There he worked for the City of Atlantic City as a Boiler Operator for twenty years. He also became a faithful, serving member of the House of God Atlantic City Church. On a local level, he was Chairman of the Deacons Board, Trustee Board member, President of the Courtesy Welfare Department, Chair of the Finance Committee, and Sunday Bible School Senior Class teacher. On the state level of the church, Deacon Fonville was Chairman of the Deacons' Union, a member of the State Courtesy Welfare Department, and a member of the Finance Committee. He also assisted with remodeling and the upkeep of several House of God churches throughout the state of New Jersey. In 1990, his wife, the late Bishop Margie Fonville, launched a mammoth renovation project of the church. Deacon Fonville was pivotal in the completion of the project. He used his talents to renovate the building and gave his time and financial support to see the project to completion. In 2012, the Atlantic City church was damaged from Hurricane Sandy. Deacon Fonville had a burning desire to get the Lord's house back in order. He sacrificed his own home to work on and restore the church. Like Nehemiah, Deacon Fonville would not come down off the walls until God's house was complete. This was a testament to Deacon Fonville's spirit of serving and giving. Deacon Fonville was a living, walking example of what it means to be a Christian. His works extended beyond the walls of the church and permeated throughout his community. He was a pillar and legacy of his community. He was a cheerful giver and enjoyed meeting the needs of the people. For years he was a supporter and worker of the Food Bank Drive. Deacon Fonville loved the Lord with all his heart, but he also held a special place in his heart for his grandchildren. They were the center of his joy. He shared with them his love for God, family, and people everywhere. He strived to live a healthy lifestyle and was an avid walker. He was financially savvy and a good steward of his finances. Deacon Alfred Fonville was a loving, God-fearing, humble, wise and gentle giant. Alfred Fonville departed this life on Thursday, June 20, 2013. He leaves a legacy of love and fond moments to his five children, Hilda Fonville, Lionel (Taaliba), Darryl (Laura), Harold (Tanya), and David; sixteen grandchildren, two great grandchildren; his mother, Elder Willie Fonville of New Bern, North Carolina; sister, Manior Wade of New Bern; sisters-in-law, Alice (James) Waller, and Laura (Charles) Smith of Detroit, Michigan; brother-in-law, Elijah Torrence; a large host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; Goddaughters, Reverend Kimberly Scott of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Lori Davis of New York; Godson, Kyree Robinson of Trenton, New Jersey; and the House of God Church at large.
