Carey Gilbert was the son of David Gilbert and Hester Edmundson. He was born in Newberry Co., SC and moved with his father to Limestone Co., AL in the early 1830s. He married Elizabeth "Betsy" Reed in 1838 and settled in Giles Co., TN where they would have 15 children. His and Betsy's names can be found in stained glass panels in the Methodist Church in Prospect, TN.
Carey was a successful farmer and merchant, and had substantial land holdings in Giles County. He purchased a house in Pulaski at one point so his younger children could live and attend school there.
After Betsy died in 1876, he married Elizabeth Wood Redus, widow of Alfred Redus.
You will sometimes see Carey referenced as "Carey Jr." or "Cary Jr." in records in Giles County. This was to distinguish him from his uncle "Cary Sr." who also lived in the county.
---
Carey Gilbert, Esq., of Poplar Hill has bought the old Shapard house on the corner of Washington and Third Streets and will remove to Pulaski next fall for the purpose of educating some of his children. The house will be for rent from January to October 1881.
