Nathaniel Ladd was born June 17, 1722 to John Ladd and Elizabeth Sanborn, both of Kingston, New Hampshire. His parents were married on April 11, 1714. He had 7 siblings: Love (b. 1716,d. 1720); Benjamin (b. 1718); John (b. 1720); Jonathan (b. 1724); Trueworthy (b.1726); Love (b. 1728); and Dorothy (b. 1730).

Nathaniel Ladd married Sarah Clifford on August 12, 1741. Their children were:

Nathaniel born 28 September 1744
Love born 27 September 1746
Isaac born 2 June 1749
John born 26 September 1751
Benjamin born 25 September 1753
Elizabeth born 6 January 1756

Following the birth of their children the family moved from Kingston, NH to Alexandria, NH.
They moved to Washington Plantation (now Mount Vernon)to join their son John between 1782 and 1790.
