Sister Eleanor "Ellie" Kratz, age 83, died at the Marie-Rose Center at Mary's Woods at Marylhurst in Lake Oswego, September 28, 2019. A member of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary for 63 years, her funeral was held at in the Chapel of the Holy Names, Marylhurst, Oregon. Burial followed at Holy Names Cemetery.
The only child of George and Katherina Wengert Kratz, Ellie was born in New York, lived in New Jersey, came to Portland as an 11-year-old and met the Holy Names Sisters as a sixth grader at Holy Redeemer School. After graduating from St. Mary's Academy, she entered the Sisters' novitiate at Marylhurst and received the name Sister Christa Mary.
During her early career Sister Ellie taught primary grades in SNJM schools in Oregon and Washington, including nine years at The Assumption, Portland. During this time she completed an education degree at Marylhurst College. She served as principal at schools in Newberg and The Dalles.
Upon leaving formal education, she completed CPE training serving as a hospital chaplain for nine years in Lewiston, Idaho. She returned to Oregon to serve as Family Representative for the retired Sisters living at Mary's Woods at Marylhurst. Most recently she was a member of the retirement community there.
Sister Ellie is survived by cousins in Germany and the members of her religious community.
