Roy Peter Nelson, 100, was born August 27, 1919 and passed away on Sunday, September 22, 2019.

Mr. Nelson joined the Navy in 1937 and served until 1951. He served on USS Ranger CV4, USS Broadwater-APA 137 and as the Master of Arms at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia. He enjoyed attending the approximately 15 USS Ranger Reunions across the United States that he went to. After leaving the Navy, he worked at Snellings Funeral Home in Portsmouth, Virginia. Mr. Nelson was a Master Mason for over 60 years at Lake Drummond Masonic Lodge in Chesapeake, VA. He also served as a Deacon for the First Lutheran Church of Portsmouth, VA and was a member of the American Legion Post 193 in Chapin. He was always willing and ready to help anyone in need. Most of all, his greatest joy and love was being with family and his grandchildren.

Mr. Nelson is survived by his daughter, Harriet E. Hatchell; grandchildren, Michael Hatchell (Tammy) of Chapin, SC, Heath Hatchell (Saralyn) of Alpharetta, GA and Kathleen Parks (Stan) of Chapin, SC; great grandchildren, Tyler Hatchell, Miles Parks, Ryland Parks, Everest Parks and Derrick Parks; brother, Donald Nelson; nephew, Rick Johnson (Kathy); and niece, Donna Miller (Tim).

He was predeceased by his wife, Marian C. Nelson; two sisters, Dorothy McClenaghen, Helen Johnson and brother, Norman Nelson.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at the New Life Chapel at The Heritage at Lowman, 2101 Dutch Fork Road, Chapin, SC 29036. Interment will follow at Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church Cemetery in Chapin. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Horeb Cemetery Fund, 101 East Boundary Street, Chapin, SC 29036 or to the American Legion Post 193, 102 Lexington Avenue, Chapin, SC 29036. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Chapin Chapel, is assisting the family with arrangements.
