Darrell Dean Freeman, 85 years old, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 27, 2017, following a brief hospitalization and rehabilitation center stay. He was born in McPherson, Kansas, the second son of Guy Norman and Grace Arlene Skinner Freeman. He was pre-deceased by his parents, his beloved wife of 59 years, Cynthia Annette McClendon Freeman, his older brother Valjean Marion Freeman, and his nephew, Norman Leon Hall. He is survived by two daughters, Jan Leslie Freeman Therrien and Laura Annette Freeman Hughes (Eddie), two younger siblings, Wethalee Elmore (David) and Bob Freeman (Hazel), three grandchildren - Jessica Mary Therrien, Sara Annette Hughes Holcombe (George), and Ward Hughes (Jessi) - nine great grandchildren, three nephews, and three nieces.
Darrell grew up in Dallas, Texas and graduated from North Dallas High School in 1948. He was a natural athlete, playing both football and baseball in high school. He attended Bethany Nazarene Seminary outside Oklahoma City, Oklahoma for one year, and then attended North Texas State University in Denton, Texas, where he was a fraternity brother in Sigma Nu and where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in June, 1954.
There are four generations of military service in Darrell's family. He served as an Airman in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1950-1954. His oldest daughter, Leslie, is a retired Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy, and his oldest granddaughter, Jessica, served six and a half years in the U.S. Navy. His father-in-law, Frank C. McClendon, was a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force who served in Korea, and his youngest daughter's (Laura) father-in-law, Johnnie Hughes, served in the U.S. Air Force during WWII.
He resided in Dallas, Texas and was employed by Insurance Company of North America (INA) as a Marketing Underwriter for Group Property and Casualty insurance products. He enjoyed a successful 29 ½ year career with INA/CIGNA, where he had opportunities to live in Houston, TX, Jackson, MS, Atlanta, GA, and Savannah, GA. Following his insurance career he obtained a Master of Education from Georgia State University, Atlanta, GA in June 1986, and taught 6th grade Math and Social Studies for ten years at Briar Vista Elementary School, Atlanta, GA.
His interests were many and varied. He enjoyed watching golf, baseball, and football, and for many years, had season tickets to Atlanta Falcons games, which he attended with his wife and sometimes his grandson. He laid bricks for his father and with his brothers to earn money for his college studies, and from those experiences, developed a love of masonry architecture. He loved to visit gardens and museums, attend operas, symphonies, and musicals, and he spent many years singing in the choir at Brookhaven Christian Church (DOC), Atlanta, GA. One of his greatest pleasures was traveling with his wife, both domestically and internationally. He had a sharp intellect and a quick wit. He enjoyed history, working crossword and Sudoku puzzles, watching old movies, and learning about birds of prey. He particularly liked hawks and eagles.
Darrell was a beloved son, brother, husband, son-in-law, father, father-in-law, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, and friend. He was a faithful Christian servant who believed in the dignity and value of all man and woman kind. He stood for the values of faith, family, work, knowledge, and charity, and these same values resonate in his children and grandchildren today. All who knew him liked him - he will be remembered well and greatly missed.
