Barbara B. Christensen, age 87, of Cottage Grove, passed away unexpectedly on September 13, 2019.
Visitation 4-7 PM, with Memorial Service at 7:00 PM, Thursday, September 19th, 2019 at Kok Funeral Home, 7676 80th St. S., Cottage Grove. Refreshments and a light meal will be served during the visitation time. Private interment at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
Barbara Bernadine Christensen was born September 14, 1931 in Johnsburg, Minnesota to John and Barbara (Schmitz) Heimer. She grew up in Adams, Minnesota and graduated from Adams High School in 1949. After high school, she moved to St. Paul and started working as a switchboard operator for Northwestern Bell. Barbara met John Franz and the couple was married in 1957 and made their home in Cottage Grove. After John’s unexpected death a few years later, Barbara kept her focus on caring for and investing in the lives of her children.
Barbara was united in marriage to Duane Christensen in July of 1967. Through the years they developed great relationships with their neighbors and enjoyed weekends with the family at their cabin near Cushing, Minnesota. Barbara loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren dearly and was always the hub of information for the family. She will be remembered for being strong and independent but also the tender side of her helped her become such a caretaker to those around her.
Barbara is survived by children, Bob (Therese), Steve (Jodi), Debi Huls (fiancé, Steve Traut), Jane (Dan) Sellberg, Sue, and Misti (Chad) Brown; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; sisters, Kay (Tom) Falvey, Sharon (Paul) Asmus, as well as numerous extended family. She is preceded in death by her first husband John (1957-1963) and second husband Duane (1967-2018).
