Marcus (Mark) B. Wubben, age 81 of Yankton, SD passed away peacefully on Monday, September 16, 2019 at Majestic Bluffs, Sister James nursing home surrounded by his loving family.
Mark was born in Yankton, SD to Raymond and Alma (Arens) Wubben on Easter Sunday, April 17, 1938, the fourth of 8 children where he grew up on a family farm one mile west of Fordyce.
Mark attended Seminary High School for 9th grade at Conception Abbey in Missouri. While there, Mark found his talent for woodworking learning from the Benedictine Monks. After High School at Holy Trinity Catholic in Hartington, rather than go into farming, Mark pursued an early career in custom cabinet making, leading to his first of many business ventures. Over the years, Mark built duplexes, mobile home parks and hog operations. Mark had businesses where he sold mobile homes, furniture and carpet, used cars and flatbed and cargo trailers.
Mark’s true joy was his family and his strength came from his faith. Mark led his family in prayer and to church on Sunday. He was a strong, compassionate father and fun, loving grandfather. He always had a great sense of humor and a wry smile.
In 1976, Mark joined the board of directors of Yankton Area Adjustment Training Center (Y.A.A.T.C.), which eventually grew into Ability Building Services (A.B.S.). With a daughter with Down’s Syndrome, Mark had a mission to help build an organization that would be a home and workplace for her and others with developmental disabilities. Mark was honored for his dedication and leadership after retiring from the board after 25 years.
In his spare time, Mark’s interest was using his creativity to design modifications to his tractors and implements, devising work and time-saving creations. Mark was a regular, enjoying coffee and conversation with many friends over the years.
Mark is survived by his wife, Janice (Martinson); two children, Thomas (Lisa Bondy) Wubben of Ankeny, IA and Lisa Wubben of Yankton; his brothers and sisters, Cyril (Coletta) Wubben of Fordyce, Betty Ann (Harold) Eickhoff, Hartington, Daniel (Dianne) Wubben, Yankton, Geralda (Dean) McGregor, Hartington, Jean Marie Lammers, Hartington, Claudette (Doug) Sternhagen, Hartington and Chuck Wubben, Yankton; his seven grandchildren, Lukas (Aloha) Uhlir, Tori Henning, Sara Henning, Matthew Wubben, Zachary Wubben, Claire Wubben and Noah Wubben; and two great-grandchildren Gabriel Uhlir, Otto Uhlir and another great grandson due in December.
Mark is preceded in death by his daughter Beth Marie Wubben, his parents, Raymond and Alma Wubben and his Godfather Bernard Wubben, Brother-in-law Dave Thoene, Brother in-law Tom Lammers and Sister-in-law Marla Wubben.
